The concept of belts and rank is probably one that most people associate with Taekwondo and martial arts in general, even if they only have a passing interest in the subject.

In Songahm Taekwondo, our belts reflect a member’s proven level of competence and (just as importantly) the progression of colors reflects an inner journey that never truly ends. Each belt achieved is truly an accomplishment worthy of respect. It is also worth noting that achieving a belt isn’t just a matter of “spending enough time” in a previous belt. In order to achieve their next rank, a student must demonstrate their proficiency in their current belt’s techniques, including Basic Moves, Sparring, and Forms.

Color Belt testing is offered every two months. Students who test should typically have 5 to 6 stripes (over summer, the red stripe may not be needed), be attending classes regularly, and be on the testing candidate list.

Stripes are awarded based on student performance in different areas of their life.

Yellow Stripe – For character development at home (please click here to submit their yellow stripe).
Blue Stripe – For consistency in attendance as well as a positive attitude.
Red Stripe – For satisfactory performance in school. Please see a staff member for a red stripe form.
Green Stripe – For demonstrating leadership qualities above and beyond what is expected. Students who earn the Green Stripe are invited to try Leadership and/or Legacy classes.
1st Black Stripe – For learning in class. Students have shown they can listen, pay attention, and follow directions.
2nd Black Stripe – For demonstrating repetition of the material in class.
3rd Black Stripe – The student is performing the cycle’s curriculum at a testing level.

Commonly Asked Questions:

Is my child ready to test? If your child is on the candidate list and continues to attend class regularly, then yes!

My child has not been behaving well at home/school. Should I allow them to test? We do not believe in rewarding unsatisfactory behavior with a new belt. Belt progression is a sign of improvement. If your child is demonstrating less than satisfactory behavior at home/school, please let us know! We are happy to help address any issues and help guide them to the correct choices. When your child starts showing progress in the right direction, allowing them to test can motivate them to continue!

My child doesn’t have all of their stripes, but they are on the candidate list. Should they still test? Our candidate list is released typically one month before testing. They will have a few weeks to continue to earn stripes. If they have earned their yellow stripe, and haven’t earned all of their stripes by the time registration has opened, check with the Chief Instructor or Program Director.
